Elephanta caves which is listed as world heritage site dedicated to Lord Shiva  which were built in 5th century  is located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri  in Mumbai Harbour, about ten kilometres to the east of the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

it consists of five Hindu caves and a few Buddhist stupa mounds that date back to the 2nd century as well as a small group of two Buddhist caves with water tanks.Cave temple Island represent the perfect expression of Indian art.

There are two category of alcoves in the site of the Elephanta Caves, the first is a large category of five Hindu caves and the second one is a smaller category of two Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves contain the stone sculptures representing the Shiva Hindu sect. 

The Elephanta caves are an unique  expression of art which include ‘Trimurti’ (three-headed) Shiva, ‘Gangadhar’ which is a manifestation of the river Ganga as she descends to the earth and ‘Ardhnareshwar’, which is a representation of Shiva and Parvati in the same body
